Dear Southfield/Detroit Citizen,
Our metropolitan Detroit community is planning a unique rally event in cooperation with The National Weather Service (NWS)-produced weather education effort called The Young Meteorologist Program on May 16, 2016. The event is called WeatherFest and will be held at the Southfield Public Library.
The goal of the event is to spur interest in meteorology for our 3rd to 8th graders and to promote weather safety and preparedness to the entire metro Detroit community. In addition to the NWS participation, there are many valuable weather enterprise and preparedness partners that also be providing their support to WeatherFest 2016 including the Southfield Public Library, City of Southfield Homeland Security, WDIV, Plan!t Now, and Oakland County Homeland Security.
The Owlie Skywarn mascot will be at WeatherFest. NOAA/NWS’ Owlie Skywarn is a severe weather preparedness hero who has helped prepare our nation’s kids and others for flash floods, storms and tornadoes and more, through an online game and teacher guides created with NOAA and a Science Teachers’ Satellite Program (SEA). The rally will connect our communities’ children and educators with this game, and importantly, with first responders and civic leaders in our community to help show the children how we’ll come together when needed to ensure that they are as safe as possible in the event of a severe weather event in our community.
Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. We encourage you to review the details of the event through the event’s website. We look forward to seeing you at WeatherFest 2016 on May 16!
